Web Design : Mistakes To Avoid
There are certain mistakes which seem to be made over and over by those who are making their own websites rather than seeking the help of a professional web design agency. These are the mistakes that should be avoided…
Do not center everything on your website pages because doing so creates an unprofessional look. There is really no reason to design your website this way, especially when you consider that a full page left to right layout is always used for book and magazine text. People are simply not used to reading large amounts of centered text and so if they come across it on your website then they will see it, instantly think that it does not look ‘right’, and click the back button on their web browser.
Do not have music that plays on your website because then the site takes longer to load and not everyone will like the music that you select to play. Even if visitors bother to wait for your site to load, they will soon click away if they do not like the music that they are being forced to listen to. If you really think that music is necessary then make it optional by having a play button located in a prominent spot at the top of your site’s pages.
Do not use JavaScript for any critical elements of your web pages since about a fifth of all Web users are not able to or do not want to run JavaScript. If something prominent on your site is not working when someone visits it then those people seeing it will assume that you site is unprofessional or outdated as you cannot be bothered to fix the problems with it. The use of JavaScript, then, means that you might lose twenty percent of your visitors before they have looked over the content of your web pages.
Do not design a full flash website if you want high rankings in search engines because search engines, not being able to read the content on flash websites, tend not to rank these types of sites as highly as mainly text and image based sites. But as long as you make certain there is a large amount of text included on your site, you do not have to leave flash out entirely. If you use a lot of flash anyhow, and get a low ranking, then you can forget about many visitors from Bing, Yahoo, and Google, which are the main search engines responsible for sending visitors to websites.
These then are the main mistakes made when designing a website, but of course there are others to be aware of. Keep in mind also that even though you want a website that has a pleasing appearance, the functionality and ease of use for your visitors is far more important than the appearance. You may want to hire a web design company if you do not feel quite ready yet to create a website all by yourself which not only looks great but which provides a good user experience for your visitors as well.
