SEO is no place for amateurs

It seems everyone wants to be a search engine optimization specialist now; at the very least, it’s hard to turn around without seeing someone else trying to sell you their services as a SEO specialist. Of course, many if not most of these people are hardly successful with their own website’s SEO!

It isn’t that there are not talented SEO specialists and internet marketing consultants out there, but just as many who are inexperienced. As a result, these firms are at best unhelpful and at worst can actually hurt the page ranking of your website should you decide to use their services.

Why you Should Avoid the Amateurs. Essentially, you need to bear in mind that while any Tom, Dick, and Harry can learn about search engine optimization, it takes several years of dedication, practice, and careful analysis, in order to fully understand the different techniques, and how to apply different techniques to different types of business.

A successful SEO campaign entails a complex set of tasks beginning with keyword research. This is the process of determining which keywords will work the best for a particular site.

Once the ideal keywords have been established, it can be incredibly tempting to simply spread them around on your website and hope for the best. However, in most cases you’ll find that the most popular keywords also have the most competition. As such, why bother targeting particular keywords, irrespective of how popular they are, if there’s virtually no chance they are going to help in terms of ranking? In fact, you could end up waiting for several months before the major search engines start recognizing your website.

A genuine internet marketing professional who knows his or her search engine optimization does things differently. They know which keywords are too competitive or unlikely to be searched and which are the most likely to work well for a website.

Analytics and tracking tools are other things which are part of the toolkit of a professional SEO specialist. Tracking the progress of any sort of internet marketing campaign is an essential part of ensuring its success – SEO and online marketing are highly traceable and campaigns can easily be fine tuned on the fly. Anyone who doesn’t carefully monitor their SEO efforts is not doing their best to ensure a good return on investment; not an encouraging sign.

As with every other kind of business, there are plenty of SEO scams online as well. These unscrupulous operators are perfectly aware that they can’t deliver on their promises, but make all manner of outlandish claims in order to sell unwitting businesses their services. These firms can be spotted due to promising #1 search engine rankings using their suggested keywords.

There is a kernel of truth to the claims these unscrupulous firms make about being able to rank in the top slot for the keywords they suggest. Of course, these companies give you keywords to work with which no one searches – meaning that it is easy to rank first for them; but since no one uses these search terms, ranking does not equal more traffic in this case.

Promises such as getting your site to the top of the search results is characteristic of these unscrupulous (or at best, hopelessly amateurish) businesses. No legitimate internet marketing consultant will make these kind of promises; the algorithms used by the search engines change very often, so no one who knows how SEO really works would guarantee these kind of results.

Using the wrong internet marketing consultants can cost your business a lot of money while yielding no results. Knowing how spot a fraudulent search engine optimization expert can save you a great deal of money; and choosing to work with a reputable SEO specialist will almost certainly significantly improve your site’s search engine ranking.
