Mexican Wedding Cookies – Mouthwateringly Tasty
These are Mexican traditional cookies and are truly delicious. Mexican wedding cookies are made from shortbread and groundnuts, such as pecans, walnuts and almonds, are often added to the mixture. These popular cookies are served at Mexican weddings and anniversaries and also around Christmas. There are different variations on Mexican wedding cookies throughout the world, including Russia and Sweden where they are known as teacakes. Tasty Mexican Biscochitos
Biscochitos originated in Spain. The Spanish brought the cookies to Mexico and they gained popularity there. Biscochitos are made with aniseed and dusted with cinnamon. Some biscochitos contain other ingredients, such as wine or orange juice, to enhance the taste. Cookie cutters are used to give them their unique diamond shape and it is common to serve these with wine.
Marranitos, Cochinos, or Puerquitos Cookies
Marranitos is a cookie with different names. It is also called cochinos or puerquitos in different Mexican-American communities. It is known as “gingerbread pigs” even though there is no ginger in the cookie. The cookie is shaped like a pig. Traditional marranitos get their spicy flavor from molasses. In Mexico, the bakers make their own molasses syrup by taking brown sugar and placing it into cones. It is then boiled with the right amount of water.
Once it has turned into the syrup it is then added to the dough for the little pigs. The cookie is very moist and rich in taste with a flaky top.
Mexican Churros – Ideal with Hot Chocolate
Churros originated from Spain. They are scrumptious fried cookies that are found in both Mexico and other countries. Churros are made from a light, sweetened paste, which is piped into hot oil and fried until golden brown. Cinnamon is often added to the churros recipe. These are delicious when eaten warm and street vendors in Mexico make them fresh on the street and sell them there too.
It used to be difficult to find churros outside Hispanic areas in the past. They were only sold at sporting events and carnivals and if you wanted churros, you would have to find a churros recipe and make your own. Now that Latin food is gaining popularity all over the world, you can find churros in Mexican grocery stores and in local restaurants. Some churros have an inner filling such as apple, chocolate, or strawberry but this was not part of the traditional recipe. Americans love the flavor of churros and many other nationalities are discovering them for themselves too. Churros are often eaten with coffee for breakfast or a snack at any time.
