Many highly professional packages come with a scaled down free version that is totally sufficient for a newbie designer. Before you download one, read up what other people say about it. You have to be sure it can handle all the basic thing like forms, style sheets and tables. And it should create good, clear html code.

Most good WYSIWYG editors work in much the same way as the better known word processing packages. You can type, format text, insert pictures and tables and create forms at the click of a button. Don’t be scared to experiment. Play around with colors and graphics a bit.

Read up a little about the basic principles of good design. If you are doing a business website this is quite important. Different combinations of font styles, colors, graphics and layouts will have different effects on the behavior of your visitors. If you want them to stay on your website and in the end become customers, you shouldn’t chase them away with bad design mistakes like using a very light colored text on a white background.

Another important aspect is adding the right meta tags. These tags can’t seen by your website visitors, but the search directories (such as Yahoo) and search engines (e. G. Google) use them to decide where and in which category to list your website. You can insert title tags, description tags and keywords easily with most visual editors without knowing any code.

Finally you will have to find a place to host your website. There are numerous free hosting companies. Most of them will display banner ads on your pages, so unless this is a private website it’s not very useful. Rather visit one of the website hosting directories and find a highly recommended cheap web host.

Download a copy of one of the free FTP programs from the web. A quick search on the web will reveal a large number of them. Your website editor might be able to upload files to the Internet directly, but if not such an FTP program is the only way you can upload your website files to a web server.

To design your own website therefore needs not remain a dream forever. With a little dedication and some free time it could soon turn into a reality.
