A Cisco training course is fundamentally for those who wish to understand and work with routers. Routers are what connect computer networks via the internet or lines dedicated for that purpose. It’s a good idea that you should start with CCNA. It’s not advisable to launch directly into the CCNP as it’s a considerable step up – and you should gain some working knowledge to have a go at this.

As routers connect networks together, look for a program that includes basic networking skills (such as CompTIA Network+ and A+) before you start a CCNA. It’s essential to have this background understanding on networks before getting going with Cisco or you could find yourself a little lost. Select CD and DVD ROM based physical training media wherever available. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

Proper support is incredibly important – ensure you track down something that provides 24×7 direct access, as not opting for this kind of support could hamper your progress.

Be wary of any training providers who use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – with the call-back coming in during typical office hours. This is no use if you’re stuck and want support there and then.

Be on the lookout for providers that incorporate three or four individual support centres from around the world. All of them should be combined to provide a single interface and 24×7 access, when you want it, with the minimum of hassle.

If you accept anything less than online 24×7 support, you’ll very quickly realise that you’ve made a mistake. It may be that you don’t use it late in the night, but what about weekends, evenings and early mornings at some point.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t question you thoroughly – it’s more than likely they’re really a salesperson. If they push a particular product before learning about your history and whether you have any commercial experience, then you know you’re being sold to.

Quite often, the starting point of study for a student with experience is massively dissimilar to the student with no experience.

It’s wise to consider a user-skills course first. This can help whip your basic knowledge into shape and make the learning curve a little less steep.
